The legalities of downloading Arbitrage Software Across the World.

Written 20.4.2018

For some reason, Arbitrage has often been associated with something illegal, a “black hat” type of trading, investing or gambling. Unbeknownst to some, this is most certainly not the case. Just because an individual sees and exploits a loophole in the system, doesn’t mean it’s illegal. It’s actually far from it, one can even go so far as to say it’s beneficial to the economy.

Investopedia has the following to say on the matter:

Arbitrage is the exploiting of price discrepancies within different markets of a similar or identical asset in order to generate low-risk to no-risk profits, after accounting for transaction and information costs. Arbitrage trading is not only legal but should be encouraged, as it contributes to market efficiency. Furthermore, arbitrageurs also serve a useful purpose by acting as intermediaries, providing liquidity in different markets.”

Basically, what that means is that Arbitrage traders act as mediators. They add to the economy by exploiting the difference in prices between bets, across different markets. They might not be viewed fondly by bookmakers but nothing about it is illegal, and there’s no question about it.

Having said this, it’s now obvious that the software platforms used by arbers (affectionate term for Arbitrage traders) are perfectly legal too. The legalities of downloading arbitrage software across the world are quite broad because of gambling laws and after extensive research, nowhere does it state that arbitrage software is illegal to download in any specific country, but it goes without saying that it’s most likely illegal to download and use in countries where gambling itself is illegal. That is, of course, if you use the software for betting.

Let’s have a look at which major countries prohibit gambling:

Brunei, which is another Islamic country has strict laws against gambling of any form or shape which is regulated by the Common Gaming House Act.

United Arab Emirates.

In almost every Islamic country, gambling of any kind is strictly prohibited. In some Islamic countries, there are no regulations in place against online gambling, however, in the UAE, all kinds of gambling are illegal. Online gambling is monitored by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and guilty parties can serve up to 2 years imprisonment as a result.

Japan’s regulations against gambling have loosened up over time, although all forms of online gambling are still uncompromisingly against the law.

Although gambling is completely illegal in Cambodia, its laws do not apply to tourists, so there are quite a few casinos that serve foreigners. These casinos obviously generate a notable amount of income which is regulated by the government.

North Korea.

Not unlike Cambodia, it’s strictly illegal to practice any classification of gambling but allows tourist to gamble at their one and only casino in Pyongyang.

Luckily for sports arbers, in Cyprus, the only form of online gambling that is officially allowed is Sportsbetting. All other forms are governed, so again, make sure to do your research!

When it comes to Singapore’s gambling laws, it can get quite tricky. There are loopholes but it’s best to do your research. For the purpose of this article though, all types of online gambling are strictly prohibited unless immunity is officially granted by the government.

When gambling in Qatar, you’re playing with fire. All forms of gambling are utterly illegal. Although access to foreign sports betting sites is poorly monitored, yet still restricted by the government in most cases, if you get caught, you’ll find yourself in a world of indefensible trouble.

Poland is a member of the European Union and therefore gambling is legal but is restricted and controlled by its government monopoly. All online gambling is provided by the country’s designated gambling platforms.

The laws here are also quite complicated and online gambling in Lebanon is only allowed at designated online casinos. So, unfortunately, no arbitrage software is allowed here.
